OK folks, get while the gettin' is good! I am making repairs to this as I have time, so the price is going UP!  Now $800 as it is quite drivable now, truly a "beater with a heater"! 

Sept 17 Evening Update: I took off the rear bumper cover and pushed out some of the damage and put it back on. Will clean up the paint next.

Also, see my response to Keith regarding other details on the car.

Sept 17 Update: I replaced the compressor with a J/Y one but it's not the right one, so it's not connected; basically serving as a idler pulley.  I think the old compressor is good but it's the compressor clutch is bad, so you can simply swap compressor clutches!

Also, found out the car is a 2001, not a 2004.  Which happens to be the reason the compressor I bought is not quite right. The 2001's have a one wire electrical connector, and the 2002 - 2004 have a three wire connector.

Next up, I am working on the rear bumper.  Turns out virtually all the damage is to the bumper and not in the trunk lid. and I believe I can remove the cover, pop out the dent, and rattle can it to look decent.


Be "that guy" or "that gal" when you pull into the country club or your favorite Short North club with this fine hooptie. Yes, when you pull in with this champagne colored piece of Japanese engineering, and toss your keys to the valet, your confidence and poise will show when you say "Take care of this - it has to get me through the winter! And by the way, it has REMOTE key entry!"

The A/C compressor in daughter Amanda's Civic crapped out, and rather than fix, she got a 2004 Mazda 6.  So, the Civic is up for sale.  

The good:

  • It's a Honda! Will run pretty much forever.
  • Generally known history. We are the fourth owners. Original > SCCA guy in MD > my nephew > Amanda
  • Generally well maintained. Good tires, brakes, new radiator. Newer battery (2017?)
  • Hot heat.
  • I think it has a sunroof. Stereo works well.  EX package has PW, PDL, etc.
  • You can drive to metal concerts and not worry about damage to your car.
  • Does not leak anything or use any fluids.
  • Drives great.

The not so good:
  • A/C compressor shot and making noise.  Would not recommend driving far without replacing. Compressor kits (including various other components) are $200 and up on RockAuto. Please recover the freon like you are supposed to!
  • Needs an oil change. Pretty sure I have a filter to go with it. Normally, I change the oil before selling, but at this price point, that would be a major investment!
  • Car had a light hit in left rear bumper. Trunk is bent and bumper cover is torn. Trunk still opens and closes fine. Did not get into fender IIRC. Easy fix but could be driven as is. Doesn't look terrible depending on your standards.
  • Pretty sure it has original shocks.
  • Interior needs a good cleaning. Or at least disinfecting.

Other thoughts:

  • Rallycross.
  • Autocross at NTR.  Kind of similar to RX.
  • I was thinking of removing the A/C and installing the brackets, etc. from a non AC Civic DX. Cheap fix to get it to DD status.
  • Similarly, trunk lids and bumper covers are cheap at the JY.

You won't be considered a kook when you out-corner the competition with these Hankooks!



Might consider a trade for something I am interested in. Guitars, S197 Mustang parts, etc.

It appears Pick and Pull has a Civic in the same color. $35 for the trunk lid and $40 for the bumper.

This may be the exact droid I'm  looking for, for my soon to be 16 year old son. Never owned a Honda before, would you hazard a guess that it should last a year or two with minimal repairs?

It's a honda from the early 2000s...it'll run forever (boringly) until you forget to put oil in it or it rusts to the ground.

On a more serious note, IIRC early 2000s Civic is one of the bigger takata risks, might want to make sure that gets taken care of if it hasn't been already.

Correct. It is pretty close to ready for daily driver, no A/C - truly a beater with a heater.  A few notes:
  • Changed the oil tonight (doubled the value!).
  • Checked the front pads and rear shoes - they are about 50%.
  • Found a broken lug on the LR wheel that I fixed.
  • Tires look pretty new - I think she bought them a year ago.  
  • New radiator about 3 months ago.  Old one had developed a leak as there was a light hit in front somewhere along the way, and the lower core support was bent, bending the radiator eventually causing it to leak.
  • Timing belt was done at 100,000, about 4 or 5 years ago, but I have no documentation.  If I were to keep it, I would replace along with the water pump and tensioner.
  • Bushings in the shifter and / or shift linkage are shot. Gearshift is only slightly more precise than a broomstick in bucket of mud.  But, it is functional.
  • Car is incredibly dirty, especially interior. Should clean up OK.

I drove it a few miles this evening (no plates) just to make sure it worked OK.  I am still going over it, and need to check the lights to make sure they all work, etc.
