Stirring the pot...

The next OVR Socializer will be at Hilliard VFW Post 4931, in conjunction with their monthly open to the public steak dinner.  Details as follows:

  • Date: June 14, 2019
  • Time: Dinner served 5p - 8p, live music 6p - 8p
  • Location: Hilliard VFW Post 4931, 2436 Walcutt Rd, Columbus, OH 43228. About 1.5 miles off of the I270 / Roberts Rd exit.
  • Dinner: 23 oz Porterhouse Steak, all sides, soft drinks, salad, dessert.  $18[ / person.  You don't have to get dinner if you just want to come and socialize.
  • Drinks: At the bar, $2 for bottled beers.  Don't think they have much in the way of crafts.
  • Live Music by Accordion Joe & Filthy Rich (AJFR)
  • CASH ONLY - They have an ATM there if needed.

If you have never been to a VFW before, set aside any preconceptions. It's a nice, family place (no swearing!) and the folks are great.  When you come in, you pay Linda at the door, and she will take your money for dinner and assign a table.  I am going to look into a section set aside for OVR folks to make it easy. Linda will ask how you want your steak, which will be cooked to perfection by Speedy and Phil who have been doing this forever and know how to cook a porterhouse.  BTW, they get the steak from Texas Roadhouse, and it is the same one they serve for $24.

Your dinner will be brought to your table within 20 - 30 min (depending on how busy), and it's self serve for salad and dessert.  Beer / wine / liquor is at the bar.

If they are exceptionally busy, you may have to wait for a table (possible) or they may ask you to vacate the table (HIGHLY UNLIKELY) so others can be seated.  The first couple times AJFR played, we actually drew about 30 - 40 more folks than normal, so they got backed up at the grille and with tables.  However,  we've since moved our playing to start at 6p which has helped spread things out.

Regarding AJFR, we play three sets.

  • Set 1, 6p - 7p:  Slower, quieter stuff.  More background / ambient music.  Some folks actually prefer to eat dinner and socialize vs. listen to us.  Go figure...
  • Set 2, 7p - 7:50p:  More upbeat, engaging stuff.  Actually wrote a song for the VFW which we will play during this set.
  • Set 3, 8p - Huh: Faster pace, audience participation, etc.  We play until 9, but will keep going as long as we have donations (which we give to charity).

There's a page on FB to monitor there for updates.

PLEASE INDICATE ON THE FB PAGE WHETHER YOU ARE GOING so we can give an indication to the VFW folks so they don't run out of food & drinks.

Looking forward to seeing many of you!  Any questions, post'em up!

We're a week out and I'd like to give the VFW an idea of the count from OVR.

Let me know if you are coming.  Cheap steak dinner on a Friday night.
