I brought this question up in a thread a long time ago but it was never answered.

The "Observer's Stand" issue I just got has an article on PDX preparation that mentions equivalent restraints being required for driver and passenger, which I knew. It continues in the same paragraph to say that the seat design should be the same. So...is that a requirement or a suggestion? I haven't seen any supps that explicitly state one way or another. I'd email Ken, who authored the article, but don't have his address. Hopefully a safety or tech chief can answer definitively.

i think it's more of a suggestion and not required.

Last year we had several instructors who noticed that some of our drivers Armoralled the seats just prior to the event.  Made for interesting stories when they came back in after trying to hang onto something or anything in the car to keep from sliding into their students!   Cheesy  Anyhow, I think it is a courtesy to the instructor as Simi has indicated.  I'll make sure Ken and Larry check out this forum so we can get a definative answer.

If you care enough about yourself to install a race seat and harness you need to do the same for your instructor. Perhaps arrangements can be made, but this is pretty standard for ALL organizations that do track days. Trust me here you want your instructor to be relaxed and comfortable and providing them the same level of safety is how you do that.
