Ha!  I've done that in a junkyard taking a set of Eibachs off of a 240 Volvo.  If you throw a big piece of trunk carpet over the spring it only goes 4 or 5 feet.  The strut cap and ratchet (hold with 2 fingers!) travel a bit further.

Actually, he was doing it wrong. 

Put your foot on the spring and then undo the nut at the top of the strut with an air wrench.  The nut and stuff falls off and the shock body, and the shock body doesn't shoot nearly as far as the spring did.
